What is antisemitism? Introductory workshopWhat is antisemitism? Introductory workshop
12. Dezember 2020 | 12:00 - 17:00
Antisemitism is on the rise in Europe and across the world. Among twelve EU Member states, 45% of Jewish participants in a survey by the EU Agency for Fundamental Rights (FRA) perceive antisemitism in their respective home country as “a very big problem”, another 40 percent perceive antisemitism as “a fairly big problem”. This current re-emergence of antisemitism is a contemporary phenomenon reinforced by political and economic crises. It is embedded in a broader historical trajectory. Its roots go back to pre-modern traditional forms of anti-Judaism which transformed to their contemporary form with the emergence of modern capitalist societies and nation-states.
This workshop offers an introductory understanding of antisemitism as a certain way of thinking and feeling about Jews, which may be expressed as hatred. Participants will get insight into the transition from pre-modern anti-Judaism to modern antisemitism, theoretical notions to an understanding of the political psychology behind the ideology and tools to identify and counter contemporary rhetorical and physical manifestations of antisemitism on an every-day basis.
