Zoo der Zukunft? Nicht mit uns!

Das Aktionsbündnis DecolonizeZoo ruft vom 22. bis 28. November zu einer Aktionswoche zum Leipziger Zoo auf! Als Zusammenschluss aus u.a. AG Leipzig Pokolonial, ISD Leipzig, Initiative NoZoo sowie weiteren Gruppen und Einzelpersonen kritisieren wir koloniale und rassistische Kontinuitäten im Leipziger Zoo sowie grundsätzlich die Institution Zoo als koloniales Zeitzeugnis.

Im Zoo wurden von 1876-1930 Schwarze Menschen, indigene Menschen und Menschen of Colour in sogenannten „Völkerschauen“ zur Schau gestellt. Dieses gewaltvolle Kapitel der Geschichte des Leipziger Zoos ist weder ansatzweise aufgearbeitet noch innerhalb des Zoos bzw. in der städtischen Erinnerungskultur sichtbar. Im Gegenteil: auch heute noch profitiert der Zoo von exotisierenden Abendveranstaltungen („Hakuna Matata Abend“) sowie der Darstellung außereuropäischer Kontinente als stereotyper Erlebniswelten. Trotz jahrelanger Kritik, maßgeblich von Bi_PoC Aktivist*innen, hat der Zoo bisher keine ernsthaften Versuche unternommen, das zu ändern! Damit schreibt der Zoo seine kolonialrassistische Geschichte fort!

Wir fordern eine rassismuskritische Aufarbeitung der Zurschaustellung von Menschen im Leipziger Zoo, der Rolle des Zoogründers Ernst Pinkert sowie der exotisierenden Darstellungen von Bi_PoC im Zoo heute! Gegen weißes Entertainment auf dem Rücken von Bi_PoC! Für einen Perspektivwechsel in der Erinnerungskultur!

Zoo of the future? Not with us!

The alliance for ‘DecolonizeZoo’ calls from 22 to 28 November to a week of action to at the Leipzig Zoo!

As a collaboration among AG Leipzig Postkolonial, ISD Leipzig, initiative NoZoo, and other concerned groups and individuals, we jointly criticise the colonial and racist projections and depictions at the Leipzig Zoo. Also, we question colonial continuities exhibited through the institutional functionality of the zoo.

From 1876-1930, black people, indigenous people, and people of colour were exhibited in the zoo in so-called „Völkerschauen“. This violent chapter in the history of the Leipzig Zoo has neither been dealt with nor is it visible within the zoo or in the city’s culture of remembrance. On the contrary: even today, the zoo profits from offensive colonial representations such as, the evening events („Hakuna Matata Evening“) and the demeaning and racially constructed presentation of non-European continents as stereotypical entertainment worlds. Despite years of criticism, mainly from Bi_PoC activists, the zoo has not yet made any serious attempts to change its stance! Thus, the zoo continues to uphold and project its colonial racist history!

We demand a critical reappraisal of the following: the display of people in the Leipzig Zoo, the role of the zoo founder Ernst Pinkert as well as the exoticizing representations of Bi_PoC in the zoo today! Against white entertainment on the back of Bi_PoC! For a change of perspective in the culture of remembrance!
